Best Places to Propose in Los Angeles with Private Views
A Curated List of Southern California’s Most Quiet and Almost Secluded Outdoor Spots for Surprise Marriage Proposals
Most people agree the Griffith Park Observatory is by far the best location to propose in Los Angeles. However, when it comes to popping the question, the focus should never be on the location itself. While yes, the setting should hold personal significance to both you and your fiancé, it should never overshadow the importance of your marriage proposal. After all, any place is the perfect place to propose, whether it's your own backyard or the rooftop communal area, there's no need to embark on a five-hour hike for an extravagant backdrop or turn your proposal into an elaborate event.
I believe that a marriage proposal should be simple, practical, and, above all, heartfelt. Moreover, I’m of the opinion that using the same places everyone else uses for proposing, especially the Griffith Observatory, can be problematic—unless you enjoy battling crowds and parking spaces on a Saturday in the middle of summer.
For those of you who prefer a quieter, more private setting away from iconic L.A. landmarks, I've curated a short list of lesser-known locations in the greater Los Angeles area. These spots offer breathtaking views of Downtown L.A. and the Pacific Ocean while remaining hidden from the average visitor. Each location is conveniently accessible by car, with a minute's walk from its own parking lot or free street parking. Best of all, they are free to visit, without the need for a commercial permit. Keep in mind that these places deviate from the typical L.A. icons, such as The Hollywood Sign, Griffith Observatory, or even a rooftop in the middle of Downtown Los Angeles. However, my curated list provides the perfect cover for a spontaneous and surprising marriage proposal any time of the year.
Tips for Out-of-Town Visitors Proposing in Los Angeles
Everything in L.A. is a mission no getting around it. So, brace yourself for sky-high Uber fees or consider renting a car to get around. If you’re on the fence on when to visit and propose, I'd say winter and spring are your best bets, ideally late mornings during the week when traffic tends to be lighter. And yes, there’s always heavy traffic in L.A. regardless, but I found that Thursdays generally experience the highest congestion. I don’t know why.
Keep in mind that during the peak of summer, the sky is usually nasty hazy and less vibrant compared to the clear blue skies of winter and spring. Lastly, if you hit up one of the following spots, leave no trace behind, respect our neighbors and posted parking regulations, and keep your photo sesh short, sweet and to an absolute minimum. Simplicity is key to honoring the secret and private natural settings of these locations. So, let’s not ruin it with an over-the-top obnoxious luxury picnic tent setup.
And whether you find this list beneficial or not, remember that a marriage proposal lies in the heartfelt moment shared between you and your fiancé. Because while the location does add a special touch, it shouldn't overshadow the significance of the proposal itself. Whether you choose a hidden outdoor gem or a renowned landmark, what matters is the love and commitment you express in that very moment.
